Film Workshop Copy, paste, reshuffle

Copying something does not necessarily enjoy the best reputation. In normal life, that is. In film, it's different. Before film was shown in the cinema projector, it had already been copied many times. However, film copying is not just about reproduction; it also offers a wide range of creative possibilities and is, not least, a fundamental component of experimental film.

In this two-day workshop, participants will learn about the many different possibilities of film copying, from manual work to homemade equipment, masks, enlarging, and collaging. All participants will start with a 16mm film strip and, over the course of the workshop, learn a wide variety of techniques for not only reproducing film material, but also rearranging and editing it during the copying process. The two-day workshop offers experienced participants the opportunity to try out special techniques and equipment, while beginners can playfully familiarize themselves with analog film material through the camera-less option of making films.

The workshop is supervised by Isabel Apel and Jan Nordsieck, who run DRKRM, a film and photo lab in Dresden that is open to anyone interested.
