Focus Canada SUPERSUPER8 Thursday 15 October 2020, 7 pm, Motorenhalle

8mm undivided. Trams circle. The ferry leaves and returns in one trip. Camera and characters dance. Introduced 45 years ago as a format for home movies, Super 8 films have left their marks in Canada. We witness Toronto's demonstration against the erosion of the own city by inflating a 150' long building with the help of air shafts. We travel 4000 miles from Vancouver to Halifax, following three pictures per mile. Or we simply listen: Increasingly separated from his birthplace, a 70-year-old Jew from Quebec connects personal and historical memories to create a sense of belonging. We present works by young as well as experienced Super 8 filmmakers and provide an insight into the form, aesthetics and politics of this popular but nowadays often overlooked format in Canada. Films by Chris Kennedy, Stevi Urben, Renata Mohamed, Jamie Phelan, Midi Onodera, Kika Thorne, Juliana Saragosa, Steven Topping and John Porter.
