Henk Penninga, a key figure in Frisian film culture, founded Noorderlicht Film in 1985 together with Wieke Mollema. Their documentary Doarp (My Village) premiered in 1995 at the Netherlands Film Festival, was broadcast on television, and screened at festivals in France, Spain, and Portugal. In 1996, it won the Special Jury Prize at the European Film Festival in Avilés. Using contemporary village footage and archival material, Doarp paints a heartfelt portrait of rural life in Friesland.
