Experience the exciting world of film in the International Competition. You can look forward to a carefully curated selection of nominated short films that showcase the entire spectrum of cinematic expression. After the screenings, the lights stay on: the jury and audience awards are presented in a festive setting, with the audience having a say in the decision. But that's not the end of the evening: the filmmakers offer exclusive behind-the-scenes insights and talk about their experiences and particular creative challenges.

A poignant elegy of solitude and longing, this final performance by the great James Laurenson tells the tale of an elderly man, a mechanical bird and the fragile dance between captivity and freedom. A silent song suspended amongst the stillness of a tormented soul and the endless search for the meaning of life, unfolding between dream and reality, the weight of memory and the deception of hope. A hymn to the fragility of being, where the illusion of liberty reveals the volatility of our existence.

Britta Sommermeyer – ERIKA WAR KEINE SCHREIBMASCHINE

Erika wrote in shorthand in her notebook. She kept it brief—she was definitely not a typewriter. A family history doesn't need many words. With anecdotes, one word is often enough for everyone to know what is meant and laugh. Erika left us short diary entries, unlike the fathers in my family, who published their memoirs in thick volumes. Now I am writing my story – about Erika.

Rose of Fame is a short portrait of Rosi, who has been running a small jewelry shop in Berlin for many years with great passion and business acumen. She deals in pre-owned jewelry, each piece carrying its own unique story.

Collectif Hasard – HERE OR HERE

A hand looking for a key opens the door to a possible return home. But in the course of this search, memory wavers, past and present merge in the face of an impossibility. Here or here.
This project was produced by Collectif Hasard, a group of filmmakers from France, Palestine and Iran who met in Mellionnec and made this film together.

I love exploring new cities and I love public transport. Oh Athens, your subway is beautiful! In every city I find an attractive station, train or bus. In Athens there is a bus stop called NIRVANA! Of course I have to go there.

Between urban flashes and fragments of nature, the portrait of M unfolds like a sensory and rhythmic journey. An experiment with the technical possibilities of the S8 camera.

Kate Solar – (FOR ONCE I DREAMED OF YOU)

As night falls over the fields, a woman looks into unknown areas: the space after a poem, the distance between map and territory, the darkness between film frames. A pastoral nocturne turns nside out. This 16mm work was shot at Film Farm in Mt. Forest, Ontario, then re-photographed with flashlight contact-printing. Intuitive processes consider the image and soundtrack as a living thing that breathes and decays.

Yannick Mosimann – WORLD ON A A STRING

A ferry drifts along the Weser. Slow 16mm images of boats, railings, industrial shores, and cranes, scarred and clouded by the river itself, hand-processed with its water, marked by sediment and rust, dissolve into Annina Mossoni’s text: “some people want the world on a string.”

Yoonseo Lee – YOU HAVE NO MOTHER!

'you have no mother' is the text that appears in Lady Vengeance(2005) directed by Park Chan-Wook. Geumja's daughter looks at the sky and the clouds turn into the shape of 'you have no mother'. These three women are a family. They are not blood-related but a 'chosen family' that people usually say these days. I consider family to be a relationship that shares space and humor with each other, so I got jealous of the people who became chosen family. This film started from that jealousy. These three are not the mother, father, the child. However, they are 'mother, wife, and a man'. They are cute. They go through horrible things with their cuteness. They know how to attack with their cuteness.
