The Ruddiness of Red of Kodachrome and ORWO-Color

Purplehaze, Aquagreen, Nocturne …words like magic sounds. They really illuminated the empire of Kodak. In Germany the counterpart was easily called colour palette. It was produced by Agfa and suggested „naturalness“. Tones in a soft pastel. Anno 1933ff. … You can guess: film colours have never been innocent. Quite the converse: For more than half a century the ruddiness of red and the nuances of green have been products of a complex interaction of cultural codes and technology.

The names of Agfa, Fuji, Kodak, ORWO – initials of an innovative theory of colours. How it developed, why and how two super powers did participate and how it is connected with Bollywood and Indian cow bones: two experts of the former film factory of Wolfen will bring light into the darkness.
