Hringurinn (1985) Thursday 20th January 2011 22.30
An experimental film by Fridrik Thor Fridriksson
Every beginning is narrow. Fridrik Thor Fridriksson, the most renowned Icelandic director, began his film work like many other writer-directors of the international cinema in the field of 8 and 16mm. One of the most impressive early works is Hringurinn from 1985 due to its simplicity and high effectiveness at the same time. With the help of a 16mm film camera fixed on a roof of a car, which exposes a single picture every 12 driven metres, Fridriksson circumnavigates his home island on the famous circular road. It arises a poetic documentation, which leads through the manifold and bizarre natural and cultural landscape of Iceland and presents an 80 minutes wonderful and nearly psychedelic film trip.
