Step Across the Border Thursday 20th January 2011 19.00

A Documentary by Nicolas Humbert and Werner Penzel (1987 – 1990)

A documentation on avantgarde music in a rough black & white … sounds to be a bloody hard cinema fare. But it’s one of the lightest and most fascinating 16mm films. The protagonist: Fred Frith - composer, wizard for improvisation, enfant terrible. Frith is put in the limelight by the filmmakers Nicolas Humbert and Werner Penzel with the help of a very funny editing and with a precise feeling for the sound of the pictures.

Step Across the Border, a 16mm „celluloid improvisation“, was selected under the 100 most important movies in film-history by the critics of “Cahiers du Cinema”.

Nicolas Humbert will be a guest and member of the Jury of the 12th dresdner schmalfilmtage.
