BREAKING GROUND II: Chantal Akerman: From the EastThursday, January 22, 10.30 pm

TarnationIn her independent, reduced and unconventional imagery, Chantal Akerman takes us on a journey to the East. Waiting people on the departure platform, winterly landscapes, close-ups, endless train rides – without commenting and with a very reduced soundtrack, the film leaves space for the atmospherically dense images. The 16 mm camera with its mobility and its special aesthetics is the ideal medium for Akermans cinematic field studies.

Chantal Akerman is the daughter of holocaust survivors from Poland. Her films often include biographical elements, also D'est, where she goes on a journey from East Berlin to Poland to Moskow after the fall of the Berlin Wall. The viewer is allowed to travel with her – as researcher of a disappearing communism.
