BREAKING GROUND I: Christian Petzold – Early FilmsThursday, January 22, 2015, 9.00 pm

With Ostwärts-Fernverkehrsstraße 2, Christian Petzold starts an examination, very close to the East German asphalt. Decaying factories, smoky cars and dreariness meet the brave new world … of profit opportunities: A snack bar, a hairdressing centre.
The year after the wall came down. Petzold studies the radical changes meticulously on the faces and in the landscapes of the East. The GDR, a country that has deeply affected him … on transit routes. As a child, Petzold frequently went on vacation to the GDR with his parents. Now, at the end of 1990, the pictures, prejudices and clichés are detaching themselves from an all too faint foil. Or don't they?
