INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION SUPER8/16 Saturday, 20 January 2018 9.00 pm

Traditionally the awards of the international competition for Super 8/16mm film are given on the festival Saturday. The interest of filmmakers and viewers in this contest, which is reserved solely for productions that are originally produced on the formats Super8 and 16mm, is unbroken. From more than 100 international submissions, the dresdner schmalfilmtage presented ten nominated films to the festival audience and the international jury of filmmakers: Alexandra Antony (USA), Lena Ditte Nissen (DK / DE) and Martin Blažícek (CZ). The award was awarded to "Elements 1, 2, 3" by the French filmmaker Tomaž Burlin. Burlin's dedication to 16 mm material and the soundtrack produced for the film convinced the jury as much as the experimental approach, combined with the classic three-part symmetry of the movie "the forest, the sea, and a landmark". The jury award was donated by FilmoTec Wolfen. A honorable mention was given to the film "Dog in the shade" by the Japanese Ei Toshinari. "The film is due to its fragmentary, its playful nature and its unpredictability, stimulating and mysterious at the same and it’s characterised by its unusual approach to the medium in a special way," says the jury.
In addition to the jury, the festival visitors also chose their film favourites. This year's Audience Award went to the unusual political thriller "Let sleeping beauties lie" by Swiss filmmaker Michel Antoine Chappuis. "The intuitive and humorous movie convinced me. Furthermore, one noticed that the film was made with much joy and great love for the material”, said a festival visitor. The Audience Award and the Prize for the Honorable Mention of the Jury are donated by the company click & surr.
