COUNTRY FOCUS: CZECH II - WAVES OF CHAOS. SHORT FILMS FROM PIGI Friday 17 September 2021, 6.00 pm, Motorenhalle

Irena Gosmanová, better known under the pseudonym Pigi, is probably the only female director of the Czech Underground of the 1980s. Her experimental films often take "real life" as their starting point and depict the everyday experience of a standardised society, family routines and private as well as public leisure time. Her protagonist often represents the "queen of chaos", a subversive female figure who inserts herself directly into real-life situations, breaking order and normality into ecstatic and grotesque results. Pigi's films balance between documentary and re-enactment, while her imaginative and metaphorical layers create a counterpart to the precarious living conditions of the underground community.
