Robert Nelson
Portrait: Robert Nelson – Legend of the US-underground
Film-trickster Robert Nelson is without doubt one of the most
interesting advocates of the New American Cinema of the 60ies and 70ies. “Designers
from end 80ies
fill their magazines with stuff Nelson in his time did: loops, jump cuts,
blurred motion, bleed colours. And always present in theses collages is a
generous play with typography” (Verena Dauerer – DE:BUG).
Nelsons “No Script” attitude liberates his work from conception constraint
and allows sudden turns and absurd scenes without aimlessly standing out.
His films, which were partially sound edited by Steve Reich, balance shrewd
and intuitively between formal inventiveness and sparkling anarchic humour.
