Socialist pop art
Socialist pop art in polish experimental film
Poland in the seventies, under the new political leadership of Edward Gierek,
experienced a new reform course with apparent western orientation. Politically
attached to the socialist system, the peoples Republic opens its borders
to the consume society and hitherto also to its visual codes. From this bonding,
as a cultural hybrid, results the socialist pop art, which finds its place
among others in the motion picture. Consumption as utopia – towards which
the polish artistic Avantgarde streamed (quite in a party-political manner).
Without any reference to the everyday life reality the picturesque worlds
remained highly artificial: the visualisation of a dream. Since more than
30 years, from the public disappeared, these remarkable films now saw exceptional
interest in the international art galleries. By courtesy of the Polish Archive
for experimental film in Warsaw this evening programme presents films from
Zdzisław Sosnowski, Janusz Haka, Zygmunt Rytka, Antosz I Andzia, Natalia
LL and others (put together by their leader Łukasz Rodunda).
