Japan: Forms in Public Space  Saturday 26th January 2013, 20.30

Works by Tomonari Nishikawa

In the past decade, Nishikawa has created a body of work that shows his interests in cinema apparatus and human visual perception. Choosing views in the public space as subjects, he uses certain filmmaking techniques, such as single-framing and multiple-exposure, to examine forms in everyday scenes through a chosen format. The resulting images would look familiar yet different from reality, showing the boundary between abstract and representational visuals. His works have been screened at numerous film festival, including Berlinale, Hong Kong International Film Festival, International Film Festival Rotterdam, New York Film Festival, and Toronto International Film Festival.

Nishikawa also works on installation projects with film projectors, and such pieces have been exhibited at Disjecta Art Space in Portland and San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery. Since 2006, he has been curating screening programs for various venues, including Early Monthly Segments in Toronto and Yebisu International Festival for Art & Alternative Visions in Tokyo. He is one of the co-founders of KLEX: Kuala Lumpur Experimental Film and Video Festival in Malaysia, and he has served as a juror for the 2010 Ann Arbor Film Festival and 2012 Big Muddy Film Festival. He currently teaches in Cinema Department at Binghamton University.
