PIONEERS OF AFRICAN-AMERICAN CINEMA

The unique film project is dedicated to the Afro-American cinema between 1919 and 1940. They were produced in the shadows of Hollywood and have been hard to come by until now. The severely damaged films have been gathered from collections worldwide and have been digitalised after an extensive restoration – some even with a new soundtrack by musicians such as DJ Spooky (NYC).
The collection gives insight into a diverse cultural history with works by masters such as Oscar Micheaux and fragmentary pieces and documentaries by filmmaker Zora Neale Hurston. This year's dresdner schmalfilmtage have the honour to present this film project for the first time to an audience in Germany.

Film collection by Kino Lorber (New York City), 2016

Curators for the festival: Franziska und Sophia Hoffmann
